Chromium VI: application for authorisation from CTACSub
Regarding the application for authorization submitted by the CTACsub consortium for the use of hexavalent chromium for functional chrome plating with decorative character, we are at the final stages.
The SEAC Committee, in June 2021, expressed a negative opinion about the Substitution Plan presented by the Consortium, and now the ball is in the European Commission court, which will have to decide whether to follow the opinion of SEAC and not grant authorization to use or, exceptionally, grant it, or possibly guarantee measures such that companies of the concerned sectors can adapt to the new regulatory context that will come.
The issue has therefore moved from the technical to the political level, and there are many advocacy actions put in place by our CEIR association to protect a sector such as that of sanitary taps and valves for which most of our companies would be unprepared in case of a rejection that could put an immediate stop to the use of hexavalent chromium for chrome plating, process at the heart of our production system.
In view of a possible rejection of the CTAC application for authorization for continued use of Chromium trioxide for functional chrome plating with decorative character, actions are necessary to collect information to support the future advocacy with the European Commission. To support future advocacy, there’s a need for data and information on the potential impacts that such a rejection of the authorization would cause to the sanitary taps and industrial valves sector and supply chain.
In this regard, CEIR has prepared a data collection questionnaire, which can be consulted at the following link (default language - language can be changed manually in the top right corner) to support its future advocacy actions for our sector.

All responses will be kept confidential and all information will be received and aggregated by a third-party consultant, Apeiron-Team NV. CEIR will only receive the aggregated information, such that no individual company response can be determined.
Useful notes for compilation:
- one survey for each plants should be completed. Companies with several plants within one country, can aggregate their response into one questionnaire.
- companies can distribute the survey within their supply chain.
- deadline to complete the questionnaire is Tuesday 26 April.
